Secondary flows in turbulent boundary layers developing over truncated cone surfaces

چکیده
The evolution of a turbulent boundary layer over truncated cones in staggered and random configurations is investigated using direct numerical simulations. Three planform densities one staggered, which closely match the configuration recent experiment by Womack et al. ( J. Fluid Mech. , vol. 933, 2022, A38), are considered. also used to validate present computations found reproduce flow measurements very accurately. Spanwise heterogeneity mean streamwise velocity form high low momentum pathways was detected both arrangements, indicating presence secondary flows cross-stream plane. arrangements much weaker confined near roughness crest, while they approach edge layer. We clear correlation with leading roughness, local topography weak for all cases studied. Vorticity transport analysis employed explore nature formed, highlighting strong vortex stretching roughness. impact on statistics, especially demonstrated breakdown outer-layer similarity.

Anisotropic Adaptation for Transonic Flows with Turbulent Boundary Layers
Simulation of wall-bounded turbulent flows poses significant challenges and requires tightly controlled mesh spacing and structure near the walls. Semi-structured or hybrid meshes are often used for turbulent boundary layer flows. These meshes not only account for complex geometry but also maintain highly anisotropic, graded and layered elements near the walls. However, for engineering flow pro...
متن کاملTurbulent Boundary Layers on Surfaces Covered With Filamentous Algae
Turbulent boundary layer measurements have been made on surfaces covered with filamentous marine algae. These experiments were conducted in a closed return water tunnel using a two-component, laser Doppler velocimeter (LDV). The mean velocity profiles and parameters, as well as the axial and wall-normal turbulence intensities and Reynolds shear stress, are compared with flows over smooth and sa...
متن کاملInstabilities in turbulent boundary layers
An investigation of a model of turbulence generation in the wall region of a turbulent boundary layer is made through direct numerical simulations. The model is based on the instability of a streak. First, a laminar boundary layer disturbed by a continuous blowing through a slot is simulated in order to reproduce and further investigate the results reported from the experiments of Acarlar & Smi...
متن کاملTransitional-turbulent spots and turbulent-turbulent spots in boundary layers.
Two observations drawn from a thoroughly validated direct numerical simulation of the canonical spatially developing, zero-pressure gradient, smooth, flat-plate boundary layer are presented here. The first is that, for bypass transition in the narrow sense defined herein, we found that the transitional-turbulent spot inception mechanism is analogous to the secondary instability of boundary-laye...
متن کاملControl of turbulent boundary layers
The objective of this paper is to give an overview of recent progress on boundary layer control made by the author’s research group at University of California, Los Angeles. A primary theme is to highlight the importance of a certain linear mechanism and its contribution to skin-friction drag in turbulent boundary layers—and the implication that significant drag reduction can be achieved by alt...
